DESCRIPTION:
The team of Karlsberger Architects in association with Wright McGraw Beyer Architects was recently selected to design the new Levine Children’s Hospital located on the campus of Carolinas Medical Center. Karlsberger is located in Columbus, Ohio and is the lead designer for the project. Wright McGraw Beyer Architects, functioning as the local architectural firm, is assisting with the development of the project and is performing construction administration services.
The $85-million dedicated children’s hospital opened in the fall of 2007 and provides 230 beds including Pediatric Intensive Care, Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery, Neonatal Progressive Care Nursery, 13 licensed Pediatric Rehabilitation beds, 20 Day Hospital Beds and 12 Observation Beds. The Hospital is named in honor of Sandra and Leon Levine, recognizing a $10 million dollar gift from the Leon Levine Foundation.
As part of this project, the Hospital is also constructing a new vertical expansion to the existing ICU bedtower. The existing bedtower did not meet the current seismic code requirements and required a new exterior skelton frame and building skin to provide the lateral bracing for the building. The combined projects total almost $100 million dollars in construction cost.
